A Blended Sea Ice Concentration Product from AMSR2 and VIIRS

چکیده

An effective blended Sea-Ice Concentration (SIC) product has been developed that utilizes ice concentrations from passive microwave and visible/infrared satellite instruments, specifically the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-2 (AMSR2) Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). The blending takes advantage of all-sky capability AMSR2 sensor high spatial resolution VIIRS, though it only clear sky characteristics VIIRS. After both VIIRS images are remapped to a 1 km EASE-Grid version 2, Best Linear Unbiased Estimator (BLUE) method is used combine SIC for at under clear-sky conditions. Under cloudy-sky conditions with bias correction used. For validation, Landsat data collocated February 2017 31 October 2019. Bias, standard deviation, root mean squared errors calculated SICs AMSR2, field. outperforms individual SICs. higher provide beneficial information improve upon conditions, especially during summer melt season, as consistent negative near above melting point.

Sea and Freshwater Ice Concentration from VIIRS on Suomi NPP and the Future JPSS Satellites

Information on ice is important for shipping, weather forecasting, and climate monitoring. Historically, ice cover has been detected and ice concentration has been measured using relatively low-resolution space-based passive microwave data. This study presents an algorithm to detect ice and estimate ice concentration in clear-sky areas over the ocean and inland lakes and rivers using high-resol...

Comparison between AMSR2 Sea Ice Concentration Products and Pseudo-Ship Observations of the Arctic and Antarctic Sea Ice Edge on Cloud-Free Days

In recent years, much attention has been paid to the behavior of passive microwave sea ice concentration (SIC) products for marginal ice zones. Based on the definition of ice edges from ship observations, we identified pseudo-ship observations (PSO) and generated PSO ice edges from twelve cloud-free moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) images. Two SIC products of the advanced m...

Improving Multiyear Sea Ice Concentration Estimates with Sea Ice Drift

Multiyear ice (MYI) concentration can be retrieved from passive or active microwave remote sensing observations. One of the algorithms that combines both observations is the Environmental Canada Ice Concentration Extractor (ECICE). However, factors such as ridging, snow wetness and metamorphism can cause significant changes in brightness temperature and backscatter, leading to misidentification...

Comparison between AMSR-E ASI sea-ice concentration product, MODIS and pseudo-ship observations of the Antarctic sea-ice edge

The performance of passive microwave sea-ice concentration products in the marginal ice zone and at the ice edge draws much attention in accuracy assessments. In this study, we generated 917 pseudo-ship observations from four Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images based on the Antarctic Sea Ice Processes and Climate (ASPeCt) protocol to assess the quality of the Advanced M...

Thin Ice Area Extraction in the Sea of Okhotsk from Gcom-w1/amsr2 Data

Passive microwave radiometers on-board satellites can penetrate clouds and can monitor the global sea ice distribution on daily basis. The authors have developed an algorithm to extract thin ice area in the Sea of Okhotsk from the passive microwave sensor AMSR2 on-board GCOM-W1 satellite. The algorithm uses the brightness temperature scatter plots of AMSR2 19GHz polarization difference(V–H) vs ...
